Marigold Bridal Reimagines the Wedding Gown Search in the Hudson Valley

In August 2023, Shveta Boisson launched Marigold Bridal, located in Stanfordville, NY. With a collective 20 years in the fashion and bridal industries, Shveta had acute awareness of the bridal shopping experience, as well as the wedding gown’s typically short life cycle. While there is a vast market for second-hand wedding gowns online, Shveta acknowledges that often “people want to touch the gown and try it on in reality as they are shopping for one of the most special days of their lives.”

So, when Shveta’s friend—who runs Hopewell Junction’s Moss & Moonlight healing center—suggested that she open this type of bridal shop in the region, the idea for Marigold Bridal was born. “She turns and says to me, ‘Hey, you should open a bridal shop for consignments and second-hand dresses. When I went shopping for my wedding dress, I couldn’t find any place like that in the Hudson Valley.’”

Marigold Bridal's Sustainable & Custom Services

As this concept began to blossom, Shveta visualized a bridal shop that would go above and beyond what online-only platforms can deliver. Providing private, one-on-one appointments, she explains, “The experience should be an enjoyable memory that you can keep with you.”

What makes Marigold Bridal particularly special is that in addition to gown consignment for those looking to sell their dresses and appointments for weds-to-be in search of vintage and second-hand garments, the shop also offers made-to-measure bridal gowns and custom veil and accessory appointments. “In terms of our second-hand and vintage collection, that in itself is new to our community in this environment, and something that has been missing,” says Shveta.

Handmade, made-to-measure luxury gowns are a true rarity, so taking into account her Parsons School of Design fashion design expertise and her international experience in the field, Shveta knew she had to pursue this route. “I started to discover that for nearly the cost of these second-hand gowns, I could also offer made-to-measure, which is rarely an option if you go shopping for a dress at a bridal salon. Even in the city, you would be paying significant fees for that service, assuming they even allow it,” Shveta points out. “I just knew that this was something I had to add to the offering!”

This aspect of Marigold Bridal truly sets it apart. While it is the Hudson Valley’s first and only bridal shop to prioritize the consignment and appointment-only sale of wedding gowns, Shveta notes that in making made-to-measure gowns, they ditch the standard size chart in favor of personally taking a full set of body measurements for the patron. She describes how “the gowns [are] cut and stitched to each wed-to-be’s size AND body proportions, which is a big deal. For example, where the waistline on the dress sits is almost more important than the size of the waistline in itself. The right proportion changes everything on clothes.”

With this mindful and meticulous approach to wedding gown creation, Marigold Bridal strives for flawless experiences that won’t necessitate expensive alterations later on.

Fulfilling & Memorable Work

She has found it particularly rewarding to be entrusted with a gorgeous array of vintage—almost antique—gowns from women who married as long as 70 to 80 years ago. This took Shveta by surprise, because she initially imagined her consignors bringing her more contemporary looks from well-known industry designers like Maggie Sottero

and Justin Alexander.“One of my consignors gave me a gown from 1954 that her

mother had hand stitched while she worked Haute Couture for New York City

elite after immigrating from France in 1927. It’s been an amazing honor that

I’ve been entrusted to pass these gowns on. I love hearing the stories of times past

and being able to offer that to my clients is beyond rewarding. It’s very emotional.”

To Shveta, finding the perfect dress is about more than just the dress itself, but the

heart behind what weds-to-be are wearing and how the dress encompasses the

emotions within that moment in time. “It’s a representation of how we want to

express the love and excitement that we feel starting a new chapter of our lives. I truly believe these vintage and second-hand gowns are also starting a new chapter of their lives, and there are people who connect with the history of the garment and their town through the wearing of something from another era.”

With this in mind, Shveta hopes to expand her offerings to include black bridal gowns, pant and top separates, and full bridal party dressing, making her selection even more unique and varied. “I would like Marigold Bridal to be a destination bridal shop for all those looking for fun, adventure, and heart in their gowns.”
